No Labels Urged to Commit to Democracy by Signing "No Spoiler Pledge"

In Open Letter to No Labels Delegates, Dick Gephardt, Stuart stevens Urge No Labels to Put Country Over Party

WASHINGTON, DC, MARCH 5, 2024 -- Former Congressman and co-founder of Citizens to Save Our Republic (CSOR), Dick Gephardt, along with former chief Republican strategist Stuart Stevens, today released an open letter to delegates of the upcoming March 8 No Labels virtual convention, underscoring the critical juncture at which American democracy now stands.

The letter outlines the stark choice facing American voters: a continuation of democratic governance under President Joe Biden or a shift towards autocracy with former President Donald Trump. With democracy on the line, Gephardt calls on No Labels to adopt a stance that prevents any potential spoiler effect in the election. He urges the convention to adopt a resolution for No Labels to sign the "No Spoiler Pledge," committing to withdrawing their candidate if they lack a viable path to victory by July 1.

CSOR commends No Labels for its history of positive contributions to the political landscape, including the establishment of the Problem Solvers Caucus. Further, the pledge aligns with No Labels' foundational values of compromise and bipartisan cooperation, which have been critical in addressing Congressional dysfunction and promoting effective governance.

However, continuing down their dangerous path towards running a Presidential candidate in 2024 could very well spoil the election in Donald Trump’s favor, undermining all efforts to preserve American democracy.

The letter is a reminder to No Labels delegates that American democracy may very well depend on what they do this Friday. By directing the No Labels leadership to sign that pledge, delegates will significantly diminish the risk of American democracy, which is balanced on a knife's edge. He highlights the urgency of unity among pro-democracy forces to ensure Trump, who has promised to upend the constitutional order, does not return to office.

The letter concludes with a plea for solidarity and action, reflecting a deep concern for the future of America's democratic experiment. Gephardt's message is clear: the preservation of democracy requires deliberate choices and commitments, starting with the No Labels convention's pivotal decision.
